Repairing Cracked Pots with Slip

Even the most experienced potters crack pieces occasionally. Learning to repair these cracks with slip is a valuable skill that can save your work and teach you about the material's properties.

Mixing the Perfect Slip

• Use the same clay body as the pot to ensure a similar thermal expansion rate.
• Let the clay soak in water overnight to ensure it is fully hydrated before mixing.
• Spread the slip until it has the consistency of thick mayonnaise for easy application.

The Repair Process

• Score the crack deeply with a needle tool to create a mechanical bond for the slip.
• Brush the slip into the crack, working it in with a brush or your finger.
• Hold the pieces together firmly until the slip dries and the bond is secure.
