Repairing Cracked Pots with Slip
Even the most experienced potters crack pieces occasionally. Learning to repair these cracks with slip is a valuable skill that can save your work and teach you about the material's properties.
Mixing the Perfect Slip
- Use the same clay body as the pot to ensure a similar thermal expansion rate.
- Let the clay soak in water overnight to ensure it is fully hydrated before mixing.
- Spread the slip until it has the consistency of thick mayonnaise for easy application.
The Repair Process
- Score the crack deeply with a needle tool to create a mechanical bond for the slip.
- Brush the slip into the crack, working it in with a brush or your finger.
- Hold the pieces together firmly until the slip dries and the bond is secure.
Once the repair is dry, you can sand it down and glaze it just like any other part of the pot.
