Loading the Kiln: Maximizing Efficiency
How you load your kiln has a direct impact on the quality of the final firing. Proper loading ensures that the heat reaches every corner of the kiln and that your pieces are protected from thermal shock.
Spacing and Airflow
- Leave at least one inch of space between shelves to allow for proper air circulation.
- Avoid stacking pieces directly on top of each other, as this can block heat flow and cause uneven firing.
- Use kiln stilts to separate ware on the same shelf, ensuring that no pieces are touching.
Loading Order and Placement
- Load heavy pieces on the bottom shelves to prevent warping from the weight of the ware above.
- Place ware with open tops facing away from the kiln lid to ensure the heat penetrates the interior.
- Ensure all shelves are level and secure before starting the firing cycle.
Always refer to your kiln's manual and the cone schedule for your specific firing type to load the kiln safely and effectively.
